The Fakies/Fake News Awards
The Fakies - Fake News Awards
2017 was another tremendous year for fake news. Never before has so much fake news affected so many people in so many ways with such great consequences. Fake News International is pleased to announce the preliminary list of nominees for the Second Annual Fakies Awards.
The Fakies Awards are presented annually on April 1st in Macedonia to honor the best of fake news throughout the previous year. This year’s extravaganza will be held at the fabulous Taj Majal Resort in the heart of Macedonia City. P.T. Barnum, III, will be the Master of Ceremonies.

Satire Website of the Year

Although all of us at Fake News International would like to honor all the terrific websites that have been cranking out great satire, we simply had to narrow things down. That wasn’t easy! The following nominees for Fakies have been dishing out the fake news through satire very nicely for the past year. (The slogans and descriptions following the names are from the websites.)

The Onion: America’s Finest News Source
Daily Currant: The Global Satirical Newspaper of Record
News Mutiny: Satire for the wise. News for the dumb.
The Borowitz Report: Not the news.
World News Daily Report: World News Daily Report assumes all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content.
The Valley ReportThe Valley Report is a satire news website publishing articles related to real and fictitious political, social, and surreal news events.
The Beaverton: The Beaverton is a news satire and parody publication.

Late Night Host

This is one of the most competitive categories with several capable contenders, including: Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah, John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Maher.

Fake News by Real News Organizations

In the awards business, the best entries sometimes come last. Two of this year’s finalists got their stories into distribution in December, near the end of the year. What an exciting finish to an incredible year of fake news!
Fox News: In October, Fox News was hoodwinked by a veteran of the U.S. Navy who was posing as a highly decorated former Navy SEAL. It was to be an inspiring human interest story about a heroic veteran and glassmaker/artist who was making something beautiful for President Trump. Fox News played the story up bigly. However, according to military service records, the gentleman had never been a SEAL and had not received most of the decorations - including two Purple Hearts -  he claimed. After he had been outed, he apologized for the ruse.

ABC News: In December, Brian Ross of ABC News erroneously reported that Donald Trump had instructed Mike Flynn to “reach out” to the Russians prior to the election in 2016. The veritable key to the story was the timing, which ABC got wrong. Ross was subsequently suspended for four weeks.
CNN: Also in December, CNN reported that an unnamed source had told them about an email giving Donald Trump, Jr., access to a trove of WikiLeaks documents on Sept. 4, 2016. The story was presented as “smoking gun” evidence of Russian collusion in the election. In fact, the email, which no one at CNN had seen prior to “breaking the story” was sent on September 14th, after the documents had become available to the public. The date was very relevant. CNN got it wrong, as did numerous other media outlets that picked up on the story.

Fake News Person of the Year:

President Trump, The Tweetmaster

Donald Trump has issued over 2300 tweets since becoming President. Over one hundred of those tweets have criticized “the fake news.” President Trump is sometimes like the voice of a raven, chirping and tweeting in the virtual wilderness, “Prepare ye the way of The Donald.” With so many tweets to his credit, it’s not easy to select the best. Each Trump tweet has been special in its own tremendous and unforgettable way.
One thing is for certain: Trump has set the record for tweets by a United States President. It was a tremendous achievement, and no reporter, fake or real, will be able to take that away from him. Of course, many Americans are looking forward to President Trump breaking his own record in the next few years. Will he be able to break 3000? It will take discipline to crank out eight to ten tweets per day, but if anyone can pull that off, President Trump can.
In any case, here are just a few of Trump’s most memorable tweets from 2017.
“The FAKE NEWS media is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!
“This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!
“Network news has become so partisan, distorted, and fake that licenses must be challenged and, if appropriate, revoked.”
Whether he’s being attacked by purveyors of fake news, criticizing fake news, or tweeting out his own fake news, no one in the long history of mankind, and probably in the history of the universe, has done more for the advancement of Fake News than President Trump. Fake News International has invited President Trump to The Second Annual Fakies ceremony to honor him as the Fake News Person of the Year.
